RadiLog communication monitoring

Post by joro »

We are currently finalizing and implementing an improved method to capture the communication between RadiMation and the measurement devices using our own 'RadiLog' tool. This 'RadiLog' tool is similar to the National Instruments IO-Trace, NI-SPY and Agilent/Keysight IO Monitor tools.

The major reason to create this 'RadiLog' tool is to have the possibility to also monitor the communication with measurement devices that cannot be captured by the existing tools. For example: some modern amplifiers are using low-level USB communication which is impossible to be monitored by National Instruments IO-Trace. The second reason for the 'RadiLog' tool is that we want to provide a solution for the problem that depending on the used GPIB card, different monitoring tools had to be used.

The advantages of this 'RadiLog' tool are:
  • Independent of manufacturer of the used GPIB card, and a single monitoring program for all GPIB cards
  • Optimized for speed, to reduce the delay of the tests to a minimum
  • Supports logging of all communication methods: GPIB, RS232, USB, TCPIP, Ethernet, DLL's, etc...
  • Can be used to log more than only the communication with a measurement device. Also internal data variables and remarks can be logged which are important for the support.
  • Closely integrated in RadiMation to allow automatic capturing at the begin of a test
  • Easier and better usage of the program to review the captured communication, like more searching, sorting and filtering possibilities
A basic usage of the 'RadiLog' tool is to capture information from multiple measurement devices that are controlled by different communication media:

And it is also possible to show extensive internal information, which provides crucial information to the support team:

The current status is:
  • The 'RadiLog' is already used by some selected customers, and they are very enthusiastic.
  • Device drivers that support the logging are already in use and distributed to all end-users since end of December 2015
  • All important information that is monitored with the existing tools is also available in 'RadiLog'.
  • We plan to implement, include and use this 'RadiLog' tool in the 2016.1 release of RadiMation.
Together with the 'RadiLog' tool we also include another very powerful function to simplify the support of our RadiMation software. But, we will explain that in a future post.
